I’ve been walking by this sign on Gulou Dong Da Jie, not too far away from the north entrance of Nan Luo Gu Xiang for a while now and never had the time to actually check it out until a recent trip to Mao Livehouse. I was hungry enough and short on time so took the opportunity to finally jump in and see what the Kabab Classroom was all about!
At first glance, it looks and feels like a sanitized chuan’r stand with hints of Hot Beans Cooperative. The one room restaurant counts 6 tables and a cashier’s stand alongside a window behind which hides a kitchen.
The place is EXTREMELY clean and the staff wears funky uniforms consisting of black t-shirts with pins and red scarves. It feels like a modern ode to Maoist China with tapestries referencing Confucius and Marx.
The menu is plain and simple, easy to navigate in both English and Chinese with the standard selection of Chuan’r fare and accompaniments
I had a mix of healthy grub ( mixed salad) and good old meat, along with a nice bowl of tomato/egg noodles that were more than decent. One should note that some of the items on the menu are sold per jing (or half kilo) as opposed to per unit but it works out to be about the same as the competition. Just ask the friendly waitress about how many chuan’r in a jin!
This place might not teach you anything about kababs but it sure could give a few restaurants lessons in service and style. While it doesn’t win any awards, the place is positioning itself as a good alternative to holes in the walls that still keeps the small eatery spirit alive. I do have a few friends who would never be caught dead eating at a side street stand but i’m sure I’d have no problem convincing them to go here!
I will definitely be back sooner than later considering that there are plenty of good shows coming up at Mao Livehouse and it’s always good to settle the stomach before trips to Salud!
